2016 will be known as the year of off-whites. The colors of the year ranged from Simply White by Benjamin Moore, Alabaster from Sherwin-Williams, Ivory Keys from Behr, and Cappuccino White from Glidden. The off-white trend took some experts by surprise, but never the less, was still embraced throughout the design community. The anticipation of the color of the year for 2017 is as much a to-do as the Oscars.

Benjamin Moore has turned their announcement into a major event held this year at the New York Public Library. The reveal party included design editors and industry leaders alike gathering together to hear the big news that will usher in a whole new year’s worth of color trends.

And the winner is: Shadow

“After a year of looking at white, we were looking for something with more feeling,” a spokesperson for Benjamin Moore said at the event. And something different it is. Benjamin Moore is taking a bold step away from the traditional safe choice of an off-white hue.

The company also presented a palette of 22 associated colors they recommend using in combination with the color of the year which included other jewel tones such as ruby and emerald.

Shadow (2117-30) which they describe as a “rich, deep amethyst,” represents a trend towards more deep, rich jewel tones, another leading trend for 2017.

Hot on the heels of Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams has announced their color of the year as “Poised Taupe.” Though not as bold a choice as Benjamin Moore, the color, which is neither light nor dark, but something in the middle zone, should prove a popular choice. Poised Taupe, described as brownish gray, is a weathered, woodsy neutral that brings a sense of harmony, which many consumers look for in a color palette.

Sherwin-Williams’s annual National Home Design and Color Survey which included both homeowners and designers revealed that 40% would choose warmer, cozier neutrals for their interiors, with a preference given to taupe.

“Neutrals are shifting,” Sue Wadden, the director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, told the Today Show. “For five years everybody’s talking about gray ― well, they’re warming up. It’s like gray and brown had a baby, and it became taupe.”

Glidden has also decided to move away from the safe off-whites by choosing a soothing hue called Byzantine Blue as their color of the year for 2017.

“The name may say blue, but Byzantine Blue is truly a purple in disguise. It stretches the boundaries of purple to borrow all of the best qualities of blue and gray, making it an appealing color choice for nearly any room,” said Misty Yeomans, PPG color marketing manager, Glidden Paint.

Of course paint companies aren’t the only ones to define a color trend for the year. In December, Pantone, the leading color authority, will name their color of the year. Unlike last year’s choices of Serenity, a baby blue, and Rose Quartz, a pale pink, it is expected they will follow their 2017 top ten colors predictions for 2017. The hues represent more subdued, muted, earthy tones, such as Kale and Hazelnut, and primary colors, like Lapis Blue and Primrose Yellow. These color choices show a shift away from last year’s pale, soft hues and off-whites.

It looks like 2017 will be an exciting year filled with an array of beautiful color choices from bold to comforting.
