It’s that time of year. Falling leaves, cozy sweaters and 2018 paint colors of the year. Every fall, designers wait with untold excitement for the announcement from the paint giants as to what colors will trend for the coming year. And though Benjamin Moore has not yet announced their pick, it’s clear that 2018 will embody, dark hues that make a statement, excite and take us to new places of comfort.

White neutral tones will always remain a popular and safe bet. However, the 2018 darker choices embrace bolder risks in how we treat our space. From accent walls, ceilings to pops of color, black is the new neutral.

Oceanside color

Sherwin-Williams – Oceanside (SW 6496)

Though Sherwin-Williams did not pick a black hue, it did choose a rich, bold color, a far cry from last year’s Poised Taupe. Oceanside represents a green-meets-blue jewel tone, a color that bridges a harmonious balance of nature between sky and ocean.

Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams said the hue evokes a wanderlust that is both opulent and mysterious.

“People today have a growing sense of adventure, and it is making its way into even the coziest corners of our homes. We are craving things that remind us of bright folklore, like mermaids and expeditions across continents. Oceanside is the color of wanderlust right in our own homes,” says Wadden.

From the wanderlust of the ocean to the privacy of darkness.

PPG Paints – Black Flame (545-7)

For the first time in the company’s history, PPG Paints has chosen a shade of black for their 2018 color of the year. Black Flame, a sultry mix of black and indigo is reminiscent of Benjamin Moore’s 2017 Color of the Year, Shadow.

According to PPG experts, Black Flame evokes the privacy, hope and classic modernism that many consumers crave today.

“Black Flame acts like a black curtain, allowing your other décor elements to take center stage,” says Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager. “It’s a fantastic blend of black and indigo, two classic hues. Black creates the silence we crave in an information-heavy world, while the indigo offers possibility and a deep hopefulness.”

Glidden – Deep Onyx (OONN 07/000)

Glidden Paints (also owned by PPG) has followed suit and chosen Deep Onyx as their 2018 color of the year joining the trend towards darker hues. Much like the classic “little black dress” the minimalist Deep Onyx is neutral enough to go with everything.

Deep Onyx encourages a “less is more” approach to décor color, according to PPG experts.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of swathing an entire room in black, PPG’s color marketing manager for Glidden, Misty Yeomans, suggests dipping a toe in first. “Using a black paint color like Deep Onyx on your walls or in your decor may feel intimidating at first, but it’s actually one of the easiest colors to use to create the low-key, easy-going style that’s trending for 2018,” she says.

“Black can be overlooked as a neutral color, but it works well on an accent wall or as an alternative to white paint on doors, trim, and cabinets.”

Olympic – Black Magic (OL116)

PPG’s Olympic paint brand announced Black Magic as its 2018 Color of the Year, reinforcing the trend towards the dark side. Black Magic is the darkest of all the 2018 hues chosen so far, close to traditional black but with a dark charcoal undertone.

“According to a common design rule, every space should incorporate black in some way. Black Magic can easily make a statement in any home on a front door, window trim, kitchen cabinets, exposed shelving or even sliding barn doors. It works especially beautifully in a dining room with a bold light fixture,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager, Olympic paint.

So, will Benjamin Moore continue with the deep, dark neutral trend? We will have to wait and see.
